Site of Arizona Uzi tragedy had drawn concerns

WHITE HILLS – The Bullets and Burgers gun range at Arizona Last Stop fell silent this week.
No high-powered rounds could be heard at the biker bar a mile down the road, no tourists were allowed to try firing a fully automatic rifle, and no downrange neighbors feared a stray bullet. The range has closed indefinitely.
It was the week Lance Krig had both hoped for and feared since 2012. On Monday, a 9-year-old New Jersey girl would lose control of an Uzi and fatally shoot her firearms instructor.
"I walk my dog down this road right here," Krig said Wednesday from White Hills, the remnant of a former silver-mining town just east of U.S. 93, roughly halfway between Kingman and Las Vegas. "You can't imagine what it's like to be downrange when a barrage of gunpowder is released with no notice."

Stephen Lee, Actor on Seinfeld and Nash Bridges, Dies at 58

Stephen Lee, the character actor who hilariously played an overly loquacious cabinet installer on Seinfeld – among dozens of other roles on TV and in the movies – has died at 58.

Lee passed away after suffering a heart attack in his Los Angeles apartment on Aug. 14, his actress friend Lisa Pescia told the Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.

The Englewood, New Jersey, native began his acting career in the early 1980s on dramas like Hart to Hart, Hill Street Blues, Remington Steele and Scarecrow and Mrs. King.

He had a recurring role as Tony B. on Nash Bridges and also appeared on shows including Quantum Leap, Cybill, Murder One, Dark Angel, Grey's Anatomy, CSI, The West Wing and Bones.

His film credits included WarGames, La Bamba, Burlesque and The Negotiator.

Josh Gordon Reportedly Considering Playing in Canadian Football League

Suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon isn't eligible to play football in the NFL this year, but that isn't stopping the talented young star from trying to find other avenues to keep his skills sharp.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com, Gordon is looking into the possibility of playing in the Canadian Football League:
The CFL is halfway through its season, with Week 10 starting on Aug. 29. There are 20 weeks in the season, so there is room to welcome a new addition if the teams want to.
Gordon's rationale for wanting to play in Canada might be simply playing football, but Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated mentioned that all the problems the 23-year-old has had off the field makes a one-year suspension without the game dangerous:
This is a situation where you can see what both sides are trying to do, and both sides are looking out for their own best interest. Gordon is a young wide receiver coming off a fantastic season on the field with 87 catches, 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games.
The Browns understand the value Gordon has to their team on the field, even if his self-destructive nature off it prevents him from showing it in 2014. They want to protect their investment, while ensuring that they have him upon reinstatement in 2015.
Canada would provide Gordon with an outlet to not only keep his football skills in shape while waiting for his suspension to end, but to also serve as a distraction to keep him away from some of the extracurricular activities that have put him in hot water to begin with.
However, because of the way Gordon's contract is structured, the CFL isn't going to happen unless the Browns have a change of heart. This is a complicated situation that adds more layers with each passing day.

Sons of Guns' canceled after star Will Hayden arrested for allegedly repeatedly raping minor

“Sons of Guns” star Will Hayden has been arrested again, this time for aggravated rape, according to documents sent to FOX411 by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
The allegations have prompted the cancellation of his Discovery Channel series.
“Given the serious and horrific nature of the charges against Will Hayden, we have decided to halt further production of 'Sons of Guns' and cancel the series," the network said in a statement.
Hayden is accused of raping a minor “almost daily” since March 2013 and taking her virginity when she was 11 years old. TMZ reports the girl is Hayden’s daughter.  During an interview with detectives, the alleged victim said she did not report the sexual abuse because she was afraid Hayden would hurt her. The most recent abuse of the now-12-year-old girl occurred during July 2014, according to the documents.

Eduardo Campos plane crash: Brazilian presidential candidate killed

Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos has died aged 49, after his private jet encountered bad weather and crashed into houses in the coastal city of Santos on Wednesday.
The six other people travelling with Campos were also killed, as well as at least four people on the ground, according to local reports.
Air Force officials said that air traffic control lost contact with the 12-seater Cessna 560Xl jet after it could not land in Guaruja, having been confronted with cloudy, rainy weather.
It then crashed in the south-eastern city, 43 miles east of Sao Paulo, according to city hall officials in Santos.
Television footage from the scene showed the wreckage of the plane smouldering among smashed buildings in the residential neighbourhood.
The Brazilian Socialist Party (PSD) leader was governor of Penambuco state before announcing he was running for president in the 15 October elections. He was third in opinion polls. Previously he had served for 20 years as a state then federal congressman.
In light of the opposition leader’s death, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has cancelled all campaign activities for three days, Rousseff's Workers' Party said, ahead of the presidential election on 5 October.
Rousseff is leading in polls with about 36 per cent of voter support, while Senator Aecio Neves has enjoyed about 20 percent support and was widely expected to face Rousseff in a second-round runoff.
Campos, a former governor of northeastern Pernambuco state, was running as a business-friendly leftist and had strong support from many banks and industrial groups.
On Tuesday night, Campos had been in Rio de Janeiro for an interview with the country's most-watched nightly news program. Several pundits praised his performance as confident and authoritative, and said he might rise in polls as a result.
His death could see Marina Silva, his running mate, become the Brazilian Socialist Party's candidate. She placed a strong third in the 2010 presidential election and enjoys robust support from young voters and evangelical voters, but her pro-environment agenda means that many in Brazil's powerful agribusiness sector distrust her.

Review: 'Let's Be Cops' Starring Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., Nina Dobrev & Andy Garcia

From the title alone, "Let's Be Cops" makes it clear its ambitious are slight, with the comedy not asking much of the audience except to sit back and let the premise of two guys pretending to be police officers go wild. But any goodwill will likely depend on how much they can tolerate a production this lazy. Not resembling a movie as much as a series of loosely connected skits that eventually cohere into something resembling a motion picture, filled with a handful of odd continuity issues, dangling plot threads, and most importantly, the problem of being deeply unfunny, 'Let's Be Cops' is a fine example of what happens when filmmakers rely too heavily on the potential chemistry of the cast, rather than giving actors something decent on the page to work with.
Luke Greenfield, who has quickly lost whatever credit he had for directing the better-than-it-should-have-been "The Girl Next Door" a decade ago (which he notably did not write), is the cowriter and director of this film, starring "New Girl" duo Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr.. Respectively, they play Ryan and Justin (though they might as well by playing Nick and Coach), two best buds who moved from Ohio to make their dreams come true in Los Angeles (shot in Atlanta) by the time they hit thirty, only to find the future didn't turn out as planned. Former college football hero Ryan is coasting on the paltry money he made from a television ad for herpes, while Justin has an unsatisfying job at a video game company where his pitches are ignored. The cop uniforms emerge when the pair dress up as police officers for their college reunion, thinking it's a costume party when it's actually a masquerade. Embarrassed by their lack of upward mobility, they leave the party with their gear still on, but suddenly notice they command a newfound respect and sexual appeal when wearing a badge and a gun. And you know what happens next....

Tony Stewart Update: New Video Surfaces In Investigation; Kevin Ward's Father Discusses Death

Other than the now infamous clip that quickly spread around the world showing NASCAR’s Tony Stewart fatally hitting fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr., investigators are reviewing another video of the accident taken from a different angle, The Sporting News is reporting.  However, that video has not been made public, and the Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff’s Dept. has thus far said there is no evidence that Stewart intentionally ran down Ward Saturday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park during the sprint car race.
“At this time, there are no facts that exist that support any criminal behavior or conduct or any probable cause of a criminal act in this investigation,” Sherriff Philip Povero said on Monday. “This is an open investigation. What I just said is not indicative that the investigation is over or conclusions have been made.”
During the horrific incident that swept across the world of racing over the weekend, Stewart put Ward’s sprint car into the wall. With the caution flag raised, Ward, 20, then hopped out of his wrecked vehicle and walked to the middle of the track while a couple of cars buzzed by him. He was gesturing towards Stewart’s car as it came back around, and was hit by the right rear tire, dragged and then tossed about 25 feet. Lying motionless on the track, Ward was then taken to the hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigators have spoken to Stewart and will remain in contract with him should they need to speak further. They are also looking for any more videos that fans in attendance at the race may have.
According to reports, the results of Ward’s autopsy revealed he died of massive blunt force trauma. No other information about the autopsy has been revealed by investigators, such as toxicology reports, Sporting News said. Stewart pulled out of Sunday’s Watkins Glen International, after he initially planned to race. He also released a statement saying his “thoughts and prayers” were with Ward’s family. It’s also unclear if Stewart will race at Sunday’s Sprint Cup race in Michigan.
Kevin Ward Sr. and his wife Pamela were at the race, and Ward gave his first remarks since that fateful night in an interview with the Syracuse Post-Standard Tuesday. He addressed why his son got out of his car, as well as Stewart’s role in the accident.
"I think the reason he probably got out of that car is who put him into the wall. He was definitely put into the wall," Ward Sr. said. "Tony Stewart was the best damn driver by far on the track that night. Why he had to go up as high as he did and hog my son, there's no reason for it.
"The one person that knows what happened that night is possibly facing 10 years in prison. Is he going to say what he's done?" Ward Sr. said.
Ward Jr.’s funeral, according to The Post-Standard, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at South Lewis High School in Turin, New York.

Lewis Black Blasts Rush Limbaugh Over ‘Cruel and Stupid’ Comments on Robin Williams

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Comedian Lewis Black blasted radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh for his comments regarding actor Robin Williams’ suicide.
In a Facebook post Wednesday, Black called Limbaugh an “idiot” for making “cruel and stupid” statements about the politics behind Williams killing himself.
Limbaugh, speaking on his radio show Tuesday, said Williams’ likely thought process leading up to his suicide aligns with left-leaning political views.
“He had it all, but he had nothing,” Limbaugh said about Williams on Tuesday. “He made everybody else laugh but was miserable inside. I mean, it fits a certain picture, or a certain image that the left has.”
Black wrote: “F*** YOU Rush Limbaugh. Your statements were beyond cruel and stupid. They were intolerable. Enough is enough from you. You are an idiot. Don’t you ever demean the death of another human being. He was my friend. You disgust me.”
Limbaugh also said the leftist attitude is “one of pessimism and darkness, sadness — they’re never happy, are they? They’re always angry about something. No matter what they get, they’re always angry.”

The Protests In Ferguson, Missouri, You Won't Believe Happened In The United States Of America Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/pictures-ferguson-protests-2014-8#ixzz3AMif01Cm

Protests entered their fifth and most tense day in Ferguson, Missouri, in response to a police officer on Saturday fatally shooting 18-year-old Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, and it's hard to look at the photos and believe the scene is in the United States.
From heavily armed SWAT officers aiming rifles at unarmed civilians to the use of intimidating armored vehicles — it looks less small-town U.S.A. and more like Egypt's Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring. The behavior of police is similar — albeit less deadly — in the use of tear gas, rubber bullets, and a deafening
loudspeaker meant to break up the demonstration officers had declared "no longer peaceful."

Various live streams showed a defiant but mostly peaceful crowd chanting and singing songs. But some protesters have indeed been seen, as St. Louis Post-Dispatch's David Carson tweeted, throwing rocks, bottles, and Molotov cocktails.
On Wednesday evening, the situation escalated as officers over a loudspeaker told the protesters they needed to go home, although they were told their "right to assembly is not being denied." Two reporters were later arrested while working inside a McDonald's restaurant nearby for no apparent reason. (They were both later released, with no charges filed.)
Soon after, the police moved in on the crowd, firing tear gas and rubber bullets, and police officers instructed people to turn off their cameras.Soon after, the police moved in on the crowd, firing tear gas and rubber bullets, and police officers instructed people to turn off their cameras.

The Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Overnight

The annual Perseid meteor shower will streak the sky Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The best time to watch is between 3 and 4 a.m., for all time zones across the world, .
"This year, light from a nearly full moon will make the meteors harder to see, but NASA says you can still expect around 30 to 40 per hour," reports NPR's Geoff Brumfiel.
Brumfiel spoke with Rhiannon Blaauw of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office for shower-watching tips:
"Just lie on your back, look straight up, give your eyes time to adjust to the dark; it takes longer than people think," Blaauw said. "And if you can, get away from city lights — it's not great to be in the middle of Chicago."
If you manage to stay awake, but would rather stay in bed, NASA over Marshall Space Flight Center at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Lauren Bacall dead: Hollywood film noir legend dies aged 89

Lauren Bacall, one of the last remaining icons of Hollywood’s golden age, has died at her home in New York. She was 89. Bacall was best known for acting opposite her husband, Humphrey Bogart, in several 1940s classics including The Big Sleep, Key Largo and Dark Passage. Their 12-year marriage also made “Bogie and Bacall” one of the original Hollywood power couples. The actress is believed to have suffered a stroke on Tuesday morning at her apartment in Manhattan’s landmark Dakota Building, which overlooks Central Park. The Humphrey Bogart Estate announced her death on its Facebook page, saying, “With deep sorrow for the magnitude of our loss, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall.”
Born Betty Jean Perske in September 1924, Bacall grew up as the only child of a Romanian-Jewish mother and Polish-Jewish father in New York’s Bronx district. In 1944, Howard Hawks came across one of her modelling shoots in Harper’s Bazaar and had her contracted to Warner Brothers. After a successful screen test, the celebrated director told her he intended to cast her alongside Bogart or Cary Grant. “I thought Cary Grant, great. Humphrey Bogart‚ yuck,” she would later recall.
Nevertheless, her first screen role was opposite Bogart in the 1944 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel, To Have and Have Not, when she was 19 and Bogie 44. She made a deep impression on her co-star and audiences alike by delivering her most famous line in her uniquely husky voice: “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.”

WWE Raw report: Brock Lesnar hijacks Hulk Hogan's birthday party in Portland

Hulk Hogan celebrated his 61st birthday on Monday Night Raw – before Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman crashed the party.
A host of WWE Legends, including Ric Flair, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Hogan’s former New World Order allies Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, joined the Hulkster’s festivities on the red brand.
However, the gruesome twosome of Lesnar and Heyman refused to let the shindig run smoothly and halted the fun by heading to the ring and staring down the wrestling glitterati in front of them.Lesnar looked set to hand Hogan a birthday beating – until John Cena, the man The Beast Incarnate will aim to prise the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from at SummerSlam on Sunday, rushed to the fan favourite’s rescue.
Heyman guided his client – who, if you have forgotten, ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania in April – away from Cena, meaning the fans in Oregon were once again denied a sight of fisticuffs.
They were first denied a sight of fisticuffs when Lesnar refused to accept Cena’s challenge of a fight on Raw, though, as The Anomaly doesn’t wrestle for free, that came as no surprise.

Robbie Williams Alive, Hasn’t Died; Twitter Confuses UK Singer with Robin Williams’ Death; Robin Van Persie Also Included

A number of Twitter users thought Robbie Williams, the English singer-songwriter formerly with Take That, had died. Some also thought that Robin Van Persie, the Dutch footballer, also died.
However, it was likely due to confusion after Robin Williams’ death on Monday. Williams, a longtime actor and comedian, reportedly committed suicide at his home in Northern California. A toxicology report and forensics report will both be done in the coming days.
But Twitter users confused Robbie Williams, 40, with the actor.
“To a great actor and an amazing person who died today * R.I.P robbie williams,” one person said on the social media website.Added another, “RIP Robbie Williams. Your rock will be missed.”
“Just came to know about Robbie Williams’ death. If you have a problem or if you are sad, please talk to someone. Don’t end your own life,” added another.
“Rest in Peace @robbiewilliams you beautiful soul,” another said.
Some also wrote that Robin Van Persie, the Dutch soccer player, also died. He’s also still alive.

War Machine's Ex, Christy Mack, Releases Statement and Graphic Photos of Alleged Assault

War Machine, formerly Jon Koppenhaver, was recently released from his Bellator promotional contract
due to allegations that he assaulted his former girlfriend Christy Mack and another individual.
War Machine was reportedly involved in a three-person altercation early Friday morning, TMZ Sports first reported, citing Las Vegas police as its source. Police said that two of the involved parties suffered severe, but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital. One of the victims was described by police as War Machine’s “significant other.”
On Sunday, War Machine posted several comments on Twitter, several directed at Mack, saying he wasn’t a bad guy and was only trying to surprise his girlfriend with an engagement ring.
Mack on Monday posted graphic photos of the injuries she suffered, she says at the hand of War Machine, as well as a statement giving her account of what transpired.
Miss Mack’s unedited statement:

At around 2 am Friday morning, Jon Koppenhaver arrived unannounced to my home in Las Vegas, NV, after he broke up with me in May, he moved out of my house and back to San Diego. When he arrived, he found myself and one other fully clothed and unarmed in the house. Without a single word spoken, he began beating my friend; once he was finished, he sent my friend away and turned his attention to me. He made me undress and shower in front of him, then dragged me out and beat my face. I have no recollection of how many times I was hit, I just know my injuries that resulted from my beating. My injuries include 18 broken bones around my eyes, my nose is broken in 2 places, I am missing teeth and several more are broken. I am unable to chew, or see out of my left eye. My speech is slurred from my swelling and lack of teeth. I have a fractured rib and severely ruptured liver from a kick to my side. My leg is so badly injured I have not been able to walk on my own. I also attained several lesions from a knife he got from my kitchen. He pushed the knife into me in some areas such as my hand, ear, and head. He also sawed much of my hair off with this dull knife. After some time, the knife broke off of the handle and continued to threaten me with the blade. I believed I was going to die. He has beaten me many times before, but never this badly.
He took my phone and cancelled all of my plans for the following week to make sure no one would worry about my whereabouts. He told me he was going to rape me, but was disappointed in himself when he could not get hard. After another hit or two, he left me on the floor bleeding and shaking, holding my side from the pain of my rib. He left the room and went to the kitchen where I could hear him ruffling through my drawers. Assuming he was finding a sharper, more stable knife to end my life, I ran out my back door, shutting it behind me so the dogs didn't run inside to tip him off. I hopped the fence to the golf course behind my house and ran to a neighboring house. Naked and afraid he would catch me, I kept running through the neighborhood knocking on doors. Finally, one answered and I was brought to the hospital and treated for my injuries.
I would like to thank everyone for their support through this rough time. I am healing fast and well, and I appreciate all of the prayers and visits I have received over the past few days. After many months of fear and pressure to keep this man happy, although I fear for my life, I feel that I can no longer put myself in this situation. The cheating by him nearly every day, and almost weekly abuse is now more than I can stand. There is a $10k reward for the capture of Jonathan Koppenhaver at this time. Please report any information to your local police.
Thank you.

Submarine is fake? Total BS moments from Shark Week's premiere

I am pissed. Discovery got me again because I bought its Shark Week opener, Shark of Darkness: The Wrath of Submarine, which is allegedly fake. Screw you, Discovery. This is by far the biggest — but by no means the only — BS moment from Shark Week's premiere.
Like every other Shark Week sucker, I set my DVR for Shark Week's specials and was salivating at the week's big premiere: Shark of Darkness: The Wrath of Submarine. Submarine, as all Shark Week enthusiasts know, is the legendary 30-plus-foot, man-eating great white shark that chomps down on shipwreck victims right in front of us. These types of stories are what garnered Shark Week its massive popularity in the first place — documentaries of real shark behavior.

7 Shark-riffic ways to prep for Shark Week >>

Michelle Wcisel, a zoologist who specializes in behavior and has completed a Master of Science from the University of Cape Town while studying the anti-predator tactics of Cape fur seals in Shark Alley, Geyser Rock, South Africa, appears to be one of the first to call BS on Discovery's Submarine legend.
She maintains the scientists, shipwreck and even the location of Shark Alley as portrayed in the mockumentary do not exist. Wcisel says the only fact Discovery got right in its fake-u-mentary is Submarine's scar, which actually belongs to another real shark named Prop. Wcisel thinks Discovery did this to legitimize its urban legend tale.

Chomp on Shark Week 2014's all-new programming >>

I can't believe I fell for it! Sure, I had moments of, "They're going to show us real video of people who were eaten? Is that OK with their relatives?" and "There's something off about these survivors. Weren't there any fat, unattractive people on that shipwreck?" and — at the end — "Oh. My. Word. That is better than any shark movie could have thought of being!" I should have known, especially since Discovery brought us Megalodon: The Monster Shark That Lives, which was chock-full of junk science and Discovery's sister channel, Animal Planet, brought us Mermaids: Body Found, which was a complete hoax.
What gives, Discovery? I want my two hours back. When viewers tune into Discovery, they want to learn something, be fascinated — come away smarter. If we want smoke, mirrors and fake-a** content, we'll watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Shark Week also pissed us off with its fluff-fest, Shark After Dark, Live. Hosted by Josh Wolf, celebrity guests included Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, who were there to promote their new movie Let's Be Cops. Just... what? WTF, Discovery? What have celebrities got to do with sharks, or Shark Week? No. No, no, no. During Shark Week, I want to hear from scientists, experts, zoologists, people who have had their arms eaten off by a shark — I don't give a rip what Wayans thinks about sharks, and now I'm not going to go see his movie out of spite.
Shark Week, or Shark Reek, as I am heretofore calling it, has turned into another blazing pile of commercial, sold-out, marketing excrement. I'm going to give Shark Week one more night to redeem itself, but if the rest of the week is anything like the premiere, Shark Week is dead to me. Shark Week can shape up or ship out.

Breaking Down Johnny Manziel's Impressive Preseason Debut

If there is one thing Johnny Manziel is used to, it's attention. Despite Brian Hoyer being named the starter for the Cleveland Browns' first preseason game, Manziel was the main attraction and did not disappoint.
Fans would have been unsatisfied if they were expecting wild, game-breaking plays from Manziel. In fact, he was the exact opposite; he was under control, poised and used his ability to extend plays when needed during a 13-12 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday night.
On paper, Manziel finished his first preseason game 7-of-11 for 63 yards and a QB rating of 79.0. In reality, he was light-years further than most thought he would be at this point. That means the quarterback competition in Cleveland is alive and well.
Of Manziel’s four incompletions, one was a poor, rushed throw in pressure (see breakdown below), one was a possible completion if the coaches had reviewed the play and the other two were great throws dropped by inexperienced receivers. It is tough to find something to dislike in Manziel’s first game.
He also used his legs efficiently. One of the main worries with Manziel was that he would take off at the first sign of pressure. On Saturday night, he showed the ability to go through his progressions and only use his legs when the situation called for it (six times for a team-high 27 yards).
Before we break down some individual plays from Manziel’s first NFL game, let’s see what some of the national pundits had to say.

Armour: Not racing should have been obvious to Tony Stewart

Sitting out today's race at Watkins Glen was the right thing -- the only thing -- for Tony Stewart to do.
It never should have been a question.
Hours after his team's tactless announcement that it would be "business as usual" despite Stewart hitting and killing Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car race in upstate New York on Saturday night, Stewart wisely reversed course. The emotions were simply too much for everyone involved, Stewart said in a statement, acknowledging that a race track was the last place he should be right now.
Though police say charges have not been ruled out, there is no evidence of criminal intent. But a man is dead and, criminal or not, Stewart is responsible as the driver of the car that hit Ward. Racing not even 24 hours later would have trivialized the gravity of the situation.
Everyone grieves in different ways, and it's true that sports have provided much-needed solace during times fraught with emotion and sadness. The NFL and Major League Baseball helped the entire nation heal in the dark days following 9/11. Adrian Peterson played two days after the death of his young son while Brett Favre took the field the day after his father died.
But Ward's death was far too personal for Stewart to go anywhere near a track. He needs time to cry, to question, to grieve, to be surrounded by the love and support of those closest to him.
It's not the time for him to climb into a race car.
Racing is a dangerous sport, and anyone who climbs into a car has made his or her peace with that. But there is a big difference between taking your life in your hands and taking someone else's life, and Stewart needs time to process the emotional fallout. He said in his statement that "there aren't words" to describe his sadness at the crash, and police said he was "visibly shaken" after.
There is no room for distraction in a car that weighs more than a ton and can go well over 200 mph, and Stewart would have been faced with reminders of Ward and the fatal crash at every turn. It's a good bet Stewart didn't get much, if any, sleep on Saturday night, either, and that surely would have affected his reactions.
Some said Stewart should have raced to honor Ward's memory. Others crassly said Stewart would be a fool to give up the precious points that could get him into the Chase. (Regan Smith will drive Stewart's car, instead.)

Shark Week: How Discovery chooses titles like 'Air Jaws: Fin of Fury'

As Shark Week begins Sunday, Aug. 10, so does viewers’ amazement at the titles of Discovery’s new specials. “We have brainstorm meetings for titles on every show, and I’m telling you, when a brainstorm meeting on the next car show comes up, you go to a conference room and there’s like four people in it,” Michael Sorensen, VP of development and production for the channel, says. “Anytime we have a Shark Week brainstorm for titles, you have to get more seats. It’s packed, people throwing out mash-ups: One of my favorites that came out of one of these meetings was Sharkcano. I’m like, ‘I don’t even know what that is, but if we ever find sharks feeding around underwater volcanos, I’m sure there’s a show there.'”
A good title does often come first, he admits. “This might be a bit of a spoiler for next year, but Donna [Alessandro, VP of programming] came in, and she’s like, ‘I know one: The Bride of Jaws.’ I was like, ‘What is that show?’ She’s like, ‘I don’t know. That’s for you to figure out.’ So it took us like three or four months thinking, ‘Is The Bride of Jaws a love story? Is it about how great whites are mating? Is it the journey to bring two sharks together?’ And then finally, we met with this incredible science team in Australia who’s been working with this shark called Joan of Shark, which was a pretty big news story a couple months ago. She’s the biggest female great white they’ve ever seen. We’re like, ‘That could be it! That could be the focus here,'” he says. “Now it’s a show with a fantastic title, and I think it’s gonna have some incredible science.”

James Brady's Death Ruled a Homicide, 33 Years After He Was Shot

UPDATE: Federal and D.C. law enforcement officials are investigating James Brady's death as a homicide following a ruling by the Virginia medical examiner, a police spokesman confirmed to The Wire. Initial reports incorrectly cited a ruling by the D.C. medical examiner.
In a subsequent statement, the D.C. police said that its detectives along with the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office were reviewing Brady's case.
An autopsy was conducted and revealed the cause of death to be a gunshot wound and consequences thereof, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Mr. Brady’s death brings the number of criminal homicides for 2014 to 71.

Members of Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, the United States Attorney’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are reviewing this case."
ORIGINAL: James Brady never recovered from the wounds he suffered on March 30, 1981, when he was shot during John Hinckley Jr.'s attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. That was the surprise determination made Friday by the Virginia medical examiner, who ruled Brady's death this week at the age of 73 was actually a homicide resulting from the 33-year-old shooting.
The decision means that Hinckley, who now resides in a mental facility in suburban Washington, could face murder charges in federal court, NBC News reported.
Brady was serving as Reagan's press secretary when he was hit by Hinckley's bullets outside the Washington Hilton in 1981. The shooting left him paralyzed on the left side of his body, confining him to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.
Along with his wife, Sarah, he became a prominent advocate for gun control, and the Clinton-era law mandating background checks for licensed gun purchases bears his name.

'LeAnn & Eddie' recap: Rimes overshares in racy Twitter pic

LeAnn Rimes’ addiction to Twitter may have finally bitten her in the butt.
In a (maybe not so) innocent attempt to share her love of hotcakes with her followers, LeAnn’s early morning breakfast tweet included a generous view of her thong-clad rear, courtesy of a mirror that happened to be conveniently placed in the kitchen.

“I’m the only person I know that can take a selfie of pancakes and then tweet a picture where you can fully see my ass, in a thong, in the mirror behind me,” LeAnn explained on the fourth episode of her VH1 reality series, “LeAnn & Eddie.” “What the hell is wrong with me?”
Naturally, LeAnn’s conservative southern mother was NOT amused. “What is this I hear about you tweeting your butt on the Twitter?” she asked her daughter at a barbecue. As LeAnn tried to explain to her mom that she had removed the offending tweet from the Internet, Eddie piped up. “How’d it look?” he asked. LeAnn’s mom shook her head, “Not too good
After failing to win points with his mother-in-law, Eddie complained to his trainer, MJ, about having to diet for an upcoming photo shoot. Instead of eating salad in solidarity with Eddie, MJ tucked into some ribs. “I bring MJ to the barbecue for moral support, and he’s making love to these ribs,” groused Eddie.
Later in the afternoon, Nicolas, LeAnn’s stylist, brought over a rolling rack of designer samples for her for to try on. “When I was younger, all I wanted to do was sing… I never thought that fashion would be this much a part of my life,” LeAnn explained. “It seems like it has kind of taken it over at times.”
Nicolas noticed LeAnn's shapely backside and asked about the hotcake tweet. “It’s the talk of the town,” he insisted. LeAnn sighed. “It can be really, really annoying when you’ve moved on from a situation and all anyone wants to do is talk about your ass,” LeAnn griped. “I do have boobs!”
Kira, LeAnn’s publicist, was assigned to butt selfie spin control, and failed to contain the situation. “We took down as much as we could, but at this point, you’re trending on Twitter, ‘#rimeswithbooty,’” Kira said. “Apparently, your butt is very popular.”
“I know I have not earned a lot of sympathy from the public–and honestly, I’m not looking for sympathy in this situation. This is 100% my fault,” LeAnn admitted. “I take complete responsibility. I just don’t know how I just keep screwing myself over and over again.”

Cowabunga? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Forgot to Be Fun

The franchise's latest reboot is also the latest victim of the comic movie industrial complex.
If you did not happen to come of age in the 1990s, here are the main things to know about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: They are, first of all, teenagers who are also mutants—the result of exposure to a mutagen ooze—who are also ninjas who are also turtles. They are named after artists from the Italian Renaissance (Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael). They are led by a rat who is also a mutant-ninja and whose name is Splinter. They live in a sewer. They eat pizza. They fight a villain named Shredder, who is also a ninja. In the '90s, at the height of their real-world popularity, the Turtles went on a music tour. It was called the "Coming Out of Their Shells Tour," and it included songs like "Cowabunga!" and "Follow Your Heart." It did not, however, include the theme song from the Turtles' first cartoon, which declared, "They're the world's most fearsome fighting team / They're heroes in a half shell, and they're green."

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are ridiculous, is what I'm saying, and that is the source of their charm. They may be Comic Heroes in the most literal sense of the term—they were created in book form, by the artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, in 1984, and swiftly converted into action figures, video games, cartoon series, and, now, five (5!) films—but they are not Superman. They are not Batman. They are not even, mutant status aside, X-Men. They do not, like their fellow heroes, traffic in metaphor; they do not speak, symbolically, to The Way We Live Now; they do not seem to experience dark nights and/or Dark Knights of the soul.
Eastman and Laird initially intended their quirky quartet to be satire: The original TMNT comic book was a fusion-y parody of Cerebus, Daredevil, New Mutants, and Ronin. And each new interpretation of the TMNT idea has kept true to this spirit of camp. The 1991 live-action version of the TMNT movie—the wonderful terribleness of which was pretty well revealed in its title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze—featured the film debut of Vanilla Ice. Who also sang the movie's theme song. Which featured the indelible refrain "go ninja!—go ninja!—GO." Which is all just to reiterate the thing that is pretty well revealed in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' own title: that they are, above all, mutant ninja turtles. They are sublimely absurd. This is the whole point.
