Florida man kills his daughter and her six children

A grandfather shot dead his daughter and her six children before taking his own life at a home in Bell, Florida, police have said.
The children range in age from three months to 10 years old, said Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert Schultz.
The authorities have identified the gunman as Don Charles Spirit, 51.
Schultz said a colleague responded to reports of a shooting on Thursday afternoon and on arrival made contact with Spirit before he killed himself.
"I haven't seen anything like this at all," said Schultz.
"This county, this community is going to be devastated from this. It is a small county, we are all family here.
"We're asking for prayers for this community and the families involved."
After Spirit took his own life, police found the other seven bodies in the house, although there were other people there who were still alive.
Spirit, who was known to police previously, was the only suspect, said Schultz.
According to the Florida Department of Corrections, the grandfather was once behind bars for a gun charge, and was released in February 2006.
Bell is a town of about 350 people located 30 miles west of Gainesville.
Multiple shootings in the US have happened in schools, colleges, military institutions, shopping malls and homes. Each time innocent victims die, but this rural community has been shaken by the multiple killing, says the BBC's Tom Esslemont in Washington.

Open House London: How to visit 10 Downing Street

Landmark buildings in Westminster and Whitehall normally closed to the public gaze will be open this weekend, even offering the chance to visit Downing Street.
In a Daily Politics film, Giles Dilnot looks at five of the political buildings that can be visited in the Open House London event, and how a security check awaits some visitors.

Scottish referendum: What does it mean for England?

Across Northern Britain, Scots are waking up to find their country has voted to remain part of the United Kingdom. But how will their decision affect England?
The River Tweed has twisted along England's northern border for centuries.
Along the meadows and gardens that slope down to meet it, you will see anglers patiently hoping to catch the trout and salmon for which the river is famous.
But this morning, those who live along the river are waking to find this unchanging part of the world has changed irrevocably.
For despite the success of the "No" campaign in Scotland, it will mean big changes - changes that are not altogether welcome on the English side of the border.

Live Blog: Tracking the Giant Alibaba I.P.O.

Alibaba has captured the attention of American investors, politicians and consumers to an extent that’s unusual for a company that does much of its business in China.
The company’s shares priced at $68 on Thursday, making it one of the biggest initial public offerings in history. Apart from making its insiders rich and providing fees to Wall Street, the initial public offering reflects the rise of China’s consumer class. Investors see it as perhaps the best chance yet to buy into the country’s growth. The American-based technology giant Yahoo owns a significant stake in Alibaba, helping bolster its own stock price.
As the company begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange this morning, DealBook is taking a look at some of its past milestones, tracking its stock performance and offering analysis on how Wall Street is viewing this behemoth:

Falcons’ Blowout of Buccaneers Features a Record Return by Devin Hester

Devin Hester high-stepped to an N.F.L. record with his 20th career return touchdown, Julio Jones caught two scoring passes and the Atlanta Falcons beat the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 56-14, on Thursday night.
Atlanta scored all of its points in the first three quarters. Tampa Bay did not put up a point until midway through the fourth.
Hester ran back a punt 62 yards down the left side midway through the second quarter to give the Falcons a seven-touchdown lead. He has 14 career punt return touchdowns, five scores on kickoffs and one on a fumble return.
The previous record was held by the Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, a former Falcon who was working the game as a television analyst. Sanders was on the video board smiling and raising his arms as the public address announcer told the Georgia Dome crowd about Hester’s achievement.
The Falcons tied a team record for largest halftime lead at 35 points. They were up, 42-7, against Tampa Bay on Jan. 1, 2012.Hester, who spent the first eight years of his career with the Chicago Bears before signing as a free agent with Atlanta, copied Sanders’s renowned high step, putting his left arm up beside his helmet after he ran past punter Michael Koenen to cover the last 20 yards. Hester scored earlier in the second on a 20-yard reverse.

A Scottish Vote for Freedom

Scottish voters head to the polls Thursday to answer a simple question that will trigger very complicated effects: Should Scotland be an independent country?
If a majority votes yes, the nation – which has been under British rule since 1707 – will separate from the United Kingdom countries of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Scottish government refers to the referendum as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” because only one vote for independence was guaranteed by the 2012 Edinburgh Agreement, to take place by the end of 2014. That agreement was signed by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scottish officials and assured Scotland the ability to hold a referendum on its future.
While the “No” campaign was leading by a wide margin into September, a YouGov poll released Sept. 7 saw the “Yes” campaign take the majority for the first time, with 51 percent of Scottish voters saying they’d cast a ballot in favor of independence. But YouGov’s poll this week put the “No” campaign back ahead, forecasting it as the likely outcome.
Supporters of independence – led by the Scottish National Party and First Minister Alex Salmond, its most powerful voice – want autonomy in their domestic affairs. The party says leaving the United Kingdom will give Scotland full control over its economy, as well as things like social and energy policies.

LeBron 12: LeBron James visits Oregon to show off Nike's newest hightop

LeBron James' move from the Miami Heat to the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer was only the beginning of a monumentally busy offseason for the National Basketball Association star.
Wife Savannah Brinson is expecting their third child – their first daughter – any day. And on Tuesday, James was at Nike's headquarters near Beaverton to unveil the 12th edition of his signature hightop sneaker.
It's big business for Nike, and for James, 29. His endorsement contract with the shoemaker is worth $20 million annually – nearly as much as his contract with the Cavaliers. Reports put the price tag on the new shoe, which will be released in retail stores Oct. 11, at $200 a pair.
The stakes are high commercially, and athletically. James only wore his last shoe, the LeBron 11, intermittently last season and he acknowledged Tuesday that there were issues with the fit.
On Tuesday, though, James and Nike were very much on the same page, showing off the new, neon-colored LeBron 12, engineered with a hexagonal sole in place of the waffle pattern that defined Nike's early running shoes.
"The new technology is lightweight," James said. "It allows me to explode. When I'm landing it allows me to absorb the landing."
Nike said a player landing after a 32-inch vertical leap (James has a 40-inch vertical) can create force 10 times that of the athlete's body weight. The company boasts that its hexagonal pattern, on a sole composed of air and fiber, distributes that impact.
The shoe Nike showed off Tuesday has an aqua-green mesh, an orange border on the black Nike Swoosh, and pastel hexagons on the sole. But James said that's not necessarily the color scheme he'll be wearing on opening day – the NBA has strict guidelines that mute colors on uniforms and shoes.
This week's visit provides an opportunity for Nike and James to compare notes, to map out a marketing strategy for the coming year and to talk about what works – and what doesn't – in its shoes. James declined to go into details about issues with the LeBron 11, but said that both parties took that shoe's shortcomings very seriously.
"It hurt both of us because we loved the shoe so much, the 11, but it wasn't performing the way we wanted it to perform at a high level," he said.
That trouble informed the design of the LeBron 12, James said Tuesday. He said he has been working out in the new shoes for more than three weeks and has been pleased with the early results.
Also this summer, James said, he went on a strict, 67-day diet to test his mental fortitude.
"I had no sugars. No dairy. I had no carbs. All I ate was meat, fish, veggies and fruit," James said.
"I lost a ton of weight," he said -- something most dieters would welcome, but a change that isn't ideal for an NBA forward. "Hopefully I can pick a couple pounds back up."
In dollar terms, James is worth more to Nike than the company's chief executive (Mark Parker, who did not speak at Tuesday's event, made about $15 million last year, $5 million less than the company reportedly paid James).
Of course, NBA teams' spending is constrained by a salary cap. There's no cap on what footwear companies can spend on their endorsement contracts.
Indeed, Nike regulatory filings indicate the company will spend close to $1 billion on endorsement contracts this year. It's a key element of the company's image, which is just as important to Nike as the actual shoes and apparel it sells.
As the company says in its notes to investors, Nike's "iconic brands have worldwide recognition, and our success depends on our ability to maintain and enhance our brand image and reputation."
Nike's shoe releases have been a cultural event since the first Air Jordans hit the market in 1985. And the cluster of press from around the country and around the globe fawning over the LeBron sneakers is a testament to continued enthusiasm that rivals, among some, movie or video game releases.
After choosing to leave the Miami Heat during the offseason and return to his hometown Cavaliers, James publicly debated whether to return to wearing the number he last wore in Cleveland, No. 23. He said he was weighing whether that number should be reserved for Michael Jordan.
On Tuesday, James said he continues to look to Jordan for inspiration – on and off the court: "Follow the blueprint."
"Hopefully someday I can get to that point where I have my own standalone brand where I can sign other athletes that fit my motto," James said. "But at the end of the day, playing basketball and winning is the No. 1 thing. And that's what I learned from Mike."

Jameis Winston suspended for first half vs. Clemson after obscene comment

Florida State announced that it has suspended starting quarterback Jameis Winston for the first half of the Clemson game after Winston yelled obscenities on campus on Tuesday.
Winston imitated a popular internet meme and shouted, "f--k her right in the p---y," which was reported by many students. That followed Winston's citation for shoplifting, a sexual assault accusation, and some relatively minor run-ins.
FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said the Seminoles were exploring suspending Winston, and the university released this statement with the news minutes later:
As the university's most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University. Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others.
As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game."That was a selfish act, and that's not how you do things around here," Winston said in a press conference after the statement. He referred to the suspension as "adversity" to be "overcome," adding, "I messed up" and "I have to tone it down."
This could affect Florida State in its game against Clemson, which should be one of the Seminoles' toughest games of the season. FSU was favored by three touchdowns, but this suspension could keep the Tigers in the game, since Winston won't be available until halftime. Last season, FSU blew out Clemson in Death Valley, a stadium Winston referred to as "our house" afterward.
Sean Maguire will be FSU's quarterback in the first half. He has a "strong grip" on the No. 2 job and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. A sophomore, he has seen time as Winston's backup. He attempted 21 passes last year, completing 13 of them, and is 3-for-5 so far this season.
Winston praised Maguire and said he would help have the backup ready to play, saying, "Sean is a great quarterback, and that's why Coach Fisher recruited him ... Sean is hungry. He wants his opportunity. God has blessed him."

iOS 8 release date and update advice: iOS 8 launching today - 17 September!

iOS 8 is finally launching to the public today: 17 September, at around 6pm in the UK. Find out whether you should upgrade - and how - in our complete guide to the iOS 8 launch.

In our iOS 8 release date article we've got all the information you need to know about iOS 8, Apple's next iOS operating system for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and its imminent public launch.
That's right: iOS 8 is launching at last. Apple has announced that iOS 8 will be available to download on your iPad and iPhone today: Wednesday 17 September. We believe iOS 8 will become available to download at 1pm Eastern Time in the US, which translates to 6pm here in the UK (and 10am Pacific Time, for our West Coast readers).
Find out what to expect from iOS 8 - Read our full iOS 8 review

When is iOS 8 coming out in the UK?

iOS 8 was first unveiled to a global audience at Apple's WWDC 2014 event at the start of June, where Apple showed off new features in the next operating system for iPad and iPhone. (Among these: Family Sharing, interactive notifications, predictive typing and third-party keyboards, iCloud Drive, and a new programming language for developers. For full details of all the new features in iOS 8 view our iOS 8 Tutorials zone.)
Then, during the September keynote presentation at which Apple unveiled the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the Apple Watch, Apple announced that iOS 8 will be available to download two days before the new iPhones launch to stores. (The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus go on sale on Friday 19 September.)
That means today - 17 September. We're on the US clock here, of course, so expect iOS 8 to become available for download some time in the evening. Based on previous launches we expect iOS 8 to launch at around 6pm here in the UK.
There may be a rush on Apple's servers at first. When iOS 6 launched many people weren't able to upgrade for around a day after the new OS became available, and there were even some glitches - apps going missing and the like. The launch of iOS 7 wasn't much smoother, with chaos as people in the States left work early in order to go home to update as their work servers couldn't handle the downloads only to discover that it was Apple'se servers that were struggling. We don't expect too many problems this year; nevertheless, we usually advise readers to wait a day or two before upgrading, both to avoid the rush and so they can hear any early horror stories that might put them offf upgrading on a particular model.

The refs gift-wrapped 'MNF' for the Eagles but that 2-0 record is all that matters

After the thrilling Monday night affair between the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts, the talk on Tuesday is all about how Darren Sproles is the one of the best weapons in football, the Eagles are legitimate Super Bowl candidates and the Colts are facing those long odds of 0-2 teams making the playoffs (only 11.6% of such teams have played in the postseason since 1990). These are all legitimate topics after Philly’s come-from-behind 30-27 win.
But if not for two egregious officiating mistakes in a three-play stretch, the Colts likely would have won the game, leading to questions about the effectiveness of Nick Foles, why Chip Kelly’s offense struggled in two of its four halves and whether Indianapolis was the legit title contender who was on the field.
This is what’s so fun and so maddening about professional football. One split-second, controversial decision can be the difference between glory and failure.
The officials’ first, and biggest, mistake came on a 3rd-and-9 with the Colts at the Philly 22-yard line. After stopping the Eagles on their first drive of the fourth quarter, Indianapolis was up by seven points and on a five-minute, eight-play drive that could have sealed the game. Andrew Luck dropped back, looked for T.Y. Hilton, but badly missed him, throwing the ball directly into the hands of Eagles cornerback Malcolm Jenkins.
How did Luck miss his target so badly? Because said target was being held and shoved to the ground.
Instead of a first down at the 18-yard line, or an incompletion that would have led to a 40-yard field goal and a 10-point lead with 5:08 left, the Colts suddenly had turned the ball over while defending a seven-point lead.
Even ESPN’s Jon Gruden, who usually doesn’t spend time ripping officials, couldn’t stop talking about the blown call. It was as easy and obvious a penalty as there is in the NFL, particularly in an era in which seemingly all contact from the secondary gets flagged.
“I think I had the same view as you did,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said of the play after the game, choosing his words carefully. “It sure looked like it on the Jumbotron. We’ll look at the tape.”
Did the flag clinch the game for the Eagles? Of course not. Neither did a horse-collar penalty on Laron Landry that gave Philly an automatic first down instead of a 3rd-and-6 on the next drive. Gerry Austin, ESPN’s officiating analyst, said that was clearly the wrong call since Landry didn’t have a hand inside LeSean McCoy’s jersey.
But Philly still had to go 76 yards for the game-tying touchdown. And the Eagles defense then had to stop the Colts to give the offense a chance to win the game. And that offense had to get into field-goal range for the game-winning field goal as time expired.
It’s one thing to get the calls. It’s another to take advantage. And in the NFL, with its quick, unforgiving 16-game schedule, a controversial win counts the same as any other.

Cheech and Chong reunited on the 'Dancing With the Stars' premiere

It’s one thing for Tommy Chong to join Dancing With the Stars as the oldest contestant of the season at age 76, and it’s quite another for Cheech Marin to escort him onto the stage for his first dance number (in a car, of course).
During last night’s Dancing premiere, Richard “Cheech” Marin joined Tommy Chong for a brief moment on stage. Cheech & Chong are best known as the Grammy Award-winning comedy duo that took off in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to their films and comedy routines. And now, they apparently spend their time making bets with each other; it was a bet that got Chong on the show and got Cheech to make a cameo. But what will they bet on next?

Despite new faces, NY Giants look like same team from last year

John Mara and Steve Tisch opened their vault and allowed the Giants to add $116 million worth of contracts in an unprecedented offseason overhaul. Tom Coughlin shook up his offensive coaching staff, too. And now, two games in, the Giants have left everyone who has watched them with this depressing, nagging feeling:
They spent all that money and did all that offseason work for this?
Because right now, there is no argument to be made that the rebuilt, retooled 2014 Giants are any better than the incredibly disappointing version that missed the playoffs (again) in 2013. That team was 0-2, just like this one, on its way to a shocking 0-6 start. Maybe this team will stop the losing long before it gets that far.
But at this point is there any reason to believe that at all?
On Sunday the Giants lost, 25-14, to a tired Arizona Cardinals team coming off a short week and a cross-country flight, a team that was forced to play with a backup quarterback who hadn’t thrown an NFL pass in four years. And the mistakes they made – the costly penalties, the drops, the fumbles, the interceptions, the punch-in-the-gut follies on special teams – were exactly the kind of mistakes the Giants were making all last year.
So why would anyone think they’re really any better? Why would anybody believe at this point that this season won’t end up in the same, miserable, playoff-less way?
“I think we’re a better team than last year and I think we’ll keep grinding,” said Eli Manning. “We made improvements this week. We made strides.”
“We’ll be all right,” added defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. “Trust me, we’ll be all right. I know my team. We’ll come together.”

Did Jay Gruden prefer Kirk Cousins to RG3 all along?

Back in August, before Robert Griffin III's season started -- and perhaps ended, though reports indicate Monday optimism for his recovery from a dislocated ankle -- there was open speculation as to whether Kirk Cousins might be better suited for Jay Gruden's offense.
Apparently, Gruden believed that. Mike Wise of the Washington Post reported as much Sunday night after Cousins replaced an injured Griffin and led the Redskins to an emphatic 41-10 pounding of the Jaguars.
"The dirty little secret in Ashburn is that Coach Jay Gruden actually thought Kirk Cousins was better suited to his offense, that Robert Griffin III wasn't getting it and there was no way to delicately make a change at any point this season without causing major problems throughout the organization," Wise wrote Sunday.
This is logical (and we covered it in the latest EOF podcast, listen above/left and subscribe via iTunes here). Benching Griffin before the season began for Cousins would result in mass hysteria in Washington and amount to full-blown, preseason Shanahanigans.
Wise says he almost didn't write the Sunday column because it "felt like piling on" RG3 after the injury. But then he walked into "a very jubilant scene" in the locker room, which makes sense given the win but less sense given the injury to the Redskins star(ting) quarterback.
Read between the lines (or just in the lines) from Gruden after the game and you get the sense he's far from sweating the way things unfolded with respect to his quarterback situation.
"Kirk is a true pro," Gruden said after the game. "He's handled being a backup like a pro, he's waited patiently, and now his time is going to come to really take this thing and run with it."
Gruden then emphasized the team "can win any game" with Cousins and feels he's "very much suited for what we do."
"Kirk is a special guy. He started four games last year and didn't have great success, but obviously has a skill set that I feel like is very much suited for what we do," Gruden said. "He can handle it mentally, and obviously, physically.
"I feel that he can make every throw in the book and we are going to move forward with Kirk."

Map: The states that produce the most Miss America winners

Last night Kira Kazantsev of New York was crowned Miss America 2015. Setting aside the retrograde and frankly creepy gender politics of pageant culture for the moment, this year marked an unprecedented three straight Miss America wins for New York state. This got me wondering: which states have won the most - and fewest - Miss America competitions?
The Miss America Organization maintains a list of winners. And while some of the geographic breakdown is about what you'd expect, there are some surprises.
For starters, 19 states haven't won the Miss America competition ever. They include Northern plains states like the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming, as well as nearly every New England state. In fact there's only been one Miss America winner from New England in the contest's 93 year history, and that was Connecticut's Marian Bergeron in 1933.
On the flip side, you could probably guess some of the winningest states by their population. New York and California have produced six Miss Americas each. Pennsylvania and Illinois have each produced five. Each state only sends one contestant to the pageant per year, so theoretically their odds of winning are the same. But from a practical standpoint, having a larger population gives you a larger talent pool to draw from. Bigger states likely have more competitive state-level competitions, so their odds of producing a contestant with the skills and qualities valued in the national competition is greater.
But then you get a state like Oklahoma, which has a tenth the population of California but has produced just as many winners. Southern states, like Alabama and Mississippi, also might be overrepresented in the win totals. What gives?
One answer is that beauty pageants are a larger part of the culture in some states than in others. Web searches give some sense of this. The map below shows relative Google search volume for "beauty pageant." Interest is concentrated more in the Southern states than anywhere else. And disinterest tracks roughly with the lack of Miss America winners in some regions, particularly in the Northern plains states.

Georgia football can't rally against South Carolina; top 25 college football roundup

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Dylan Thompson threw for three touchdowns and No. 24 South Carolina's maligned defense stood strong on a fourth-quarter goal line stand to topple No. 6 Georgia 38-35 on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) had a first-and-goal on the Gamecocks' 4 down three points with 5:24 remaining. But Hutson Mason was called for intentional grounding to set Georgia back and the usually reliable Marshall Morgan missed a 28-yard field goal.
Todd Gurley ran for 131 yards and a touchdown, yet the Gamecocks (2-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) kept the Bulldogs' star from making a bigger impact.
The victory was South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier's 201st as a SEC coach, tying him for second alltime with Georgia great Vince Dooley. It put the Gamecocks back in the SEC East race.

Win vs. Penn St. could "change Rutgers football forever"

As Gary Nova walked around Rutgers' campus this week with headphones glued in his ears, he wasn't being standoffish.
The senior quarterback was just trying to block out the constant chatter about the potential impact of a Rutgers football win against Penn State when the teams meet at 8 p.m. tonight at High Point Solutions Stadium.
The only problem is that Nova couldn't where those headphones to practice or to team meetings, where even his teammates were thinking big.
"This is going to change New Jersey and Rutgers football forever," said wide receiver Leonte Carroo, one of Nova's best friends, while acknowledging that is only the case if Rutgers wins. "This is not going to be Rutgers is 3-0 for the season. This is going to be history, especially since this is our first Big Ten opponent. We're very excited."
Fueled by the bulletin-board material sent by Penn State's Bill Belton
and able to ignore a multitude of outside distractions in coach Kyle Flood's estimation, Rutgers offered no indications of tightness as it prepared to renew a border rivalry not played since before some of the current players were born.
"Like I've said a lot of times, the best thing about the world we live in is everybody is entitled to their own opinion," defensive tackle Darius Hamilton said. "Rutgers football players do have their own opinion and we're going to show them."
At 2-0, with an upset of Washington State, Rutgers already has surprised some experts. A win against Penn State could mean a Top 25 ranking long before it was expected to get one durings its Big Ten lifetime.
"Coming into the Big Ten, a lot of people wrote us off that we shouldn't be in this conference," tight end Tyler Kroft said, "and we want to show the world that we belong here and we're going to be a staple in the Big Ten."
All that extra emotion led to good energy in practice, Flood said. It could lead to a fast start on gameday. Or it could lead to coming out emotionally drained and flat.
Free safety Johnathan Aiken isn't worried about the latter.
"Guys are ready for it. Guys have been thinking about it," Aiken said. "This is the one we're going to tell coach, 'We've got it.'"
Cornerback Nadir Barnwell, a Piscataway native, was in the stands when Rutgers earned its landmark victory against Louisville in 2006. He sat alongside his father and brother in the end zone where Jeremy Ito kicked his game-winning field goal in the final seconds.
"It's amazing to be part of this and to be able to play in my town," Barnwell said. "Every game when we play home it's amazing. I still look and I'm like: I can't believe I'm here. To play Penn State in such a big game is pretty amazing to me."
So is Barnwell expecting the atmosphere to reach Louisville-like levels?
"I expect for it to be better," Barnwell said. "A bigger stage, and that's what we signed up for."
Even Nova eventually took some of the bait.
"It's going to be everything you dream of as a kid," Nova said. "Why not play your best game on this night? First game in school history in the Big Ten. Why not start it off right with a win? It's something to be proud of: That we're going to be a part of this and go out there and take advantage of it."

Is Beyoncé Pregnant Again? Jay Z Drops a Hint

Rapper reportedly changed "Beach is Better" lyric from "I replace it with another one" to "'cause she pregnant with another one

Jay Z sparked rumors Friday that his wife Beyoncé may be pregnant with a second child, after reportedly changing the lyrics to one of his songs while on tour in Paris.
While performing “Beach is Better” on his “On the Run” tour in Paris, the rapper reportedly replaced the lyric “I replace it with another one” with “‘Cause she pregnant with another one” according to People.
If it’s true Jay Z did change the lyrics on the song, it would seem to be a pretty heavy hint that BeyoncĂ© is pregnant with a little brother or sister for three-year-old Blue Ivy: tabloids widely picked up the rumor and the internet was abuzz Saturday with speculation about another Bey-by.
Reps for the couple didn’t immediately respond to People’s query about whether BeyoncĂ© is indeed pregnant, and it’s not clear whether or not Jay Z even changed the lyrics to his track. Without clear audio proof—though an Instagram post has an alleged recording—the rumor might just be wishful thinking posted on social media by some starry-eyed audience member.
But it wouldn’t be the first time the couple has made an onstage announcement about their family. BeyoncĂ© broke the news about her first pregnancy at the VMAs in 2011.

Apple bungles iPhone 6 pre-orders

Apple today quickly exhausted its pre-order supply of the larger iPhone 6 Plus as the company bungled an online effort for the second time this week.
As of 9 a.m. ET, the iPhone 6 Plus, the model with a 5.5-in. display, was listed on Apple's U.S. online store as shipping three to four weeks after ordering. The iPhone 6, which boasts a 4.7-in. screen and is the more direct successor to the iPhone 5S, remained in stock, at least on the Apple store, with deliveries promised by Sept. 19, a week from today, when the new smartphones go on sale in the U.S. and several other countries.
Short supplies are nothing new for Apple and its iPhone at on-sale launch, and even more so when it offers pre-orders. In 2012, for example, the then-new iPhone 5 sold out in about an hour. Last year was abnormal, in that Apple did not offer the more-appealing iPhone 5S for pre-order, only the less-expensive iPhone 5C, which sold poorly at the beginning.
Nor have those online pre-orders always been problem free. But the technical issues went beyond glitches this time: Many reported on Twitter that the Apple Store was unavailable hours after the 3 a.m. ET kick-off (midnight PT).
It was the second black eye for Apple in the span of four days.
On Tuesday, when Apple hosted a news conference to unveil the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus -- as well as its new electronic payment system, Apple Pay, and its first wearable, the Apple Watch -- the live webcast was a mess. For between a third and a half of the one-hour-and-45 min. broadcast, people faced constant interruptions, black screens, failed audio, pre-show color bars, repeats of parts already seen, several "Access Denied" error messages, and a Chinese translator talking over CEO Tim Cook and other Apple executives.
Customers -- potential customers might be more accurate -- took to Twitter to vent their frustrations early this morning. "I feel like it's Tuesday and I'm watching the Apple Event live stream drop out," said Dan Frakes, formerly with Macworld, in a tweet. "There's even Chinese writing on my Apple Store page."
Some, including at least one Computerworld staffer, managed to score an iPhone 6 Plus this morning, but only after using the Apple Store app on his iPhone to place the pre-order.
The quick disappearance of the iPhone 6 Plus from immediate availability was not unexpected: Talk of short supplies had circulated in the days and weeks before Tuesday's introduction, enough so that some speculated Apple would not even unveil the larger iPhone, and would instead wait until later in the year, perhaps even early next, to start selling the 5.5-in. so-called "phablet."
"In our view, the weakness in our Apple Barometer, Hon Hai Precision, and other Apple suppliers during the month of July was an indication that the supply chain began ramping production for this iPhone launch later than in the past," said Brian White, a financial analyst with Cantor Fitzgerald, in a Friday note to client. "[This] will result in supply constraints for the iPhone 6 and severe supply constraints for the iPhone 6 Plus."
White also pointed out the short supplies at U.S. carriers. As of 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT), AT&T showed a 7-14 business day delay in shipping new orders, while the carrier stretched the iPhone 6 Plus ship date to 32-45 business days, up to nine weeks, or as late as mid-November.
Analysts have debated which of the two models will ultimately sell more units. Most have predicted that the less-expensive iPhone 6 will dominate. But a few have started to hedge their bets, believing that there is even more pent-up demand -- especially at the beginning of the sales cycle -- for the iPhone 6 Plus and its larger screen on the part of current iPhone owners and those who went Android because of the bigger displays offered by Samsung.
Apple did not include the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the first wave of iPhone 6 markets. While state-run media speculated that the omission of the PRC was due to everything from sluggish regulatory approval to a desire by Apple to punish domestic carriers for leaking details, Apple may have simply decided to postpone the introduction because of inadequate supplies.
Larger-screen smartphones are particularly popular in Asia in general, and in the PRC in particular, and Apple may not have wanted to start selling the iPhone 6 Plus in the latter until it had a larger inventory.
That was White's take. "I think it was supply issues," he said in an interview. "The technical reason is that they haven't gotten approval [from the Ministry for Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)], but if Apple had wanted to sell in China, it would have gotten it done. The iPhone 6 Plus could be off the charts in China, but why put another wrench in sales if they didn't have to?"
White said he expects Apple to begin selling the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the PRC in a month or so.
Apple will begin sales of the new iPhones in its retail stores on Friday, Sept. 19, starting at 8 a.m. local time.

Giancarlo Stanton hit in face with pitch, suffers fractures and dental damage

Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins slumped to the ground in a sickening scene after right-hander Mike Fiers of the Milwaukee Brewers hit him in the face with a fastball in the top of the fifth inning Thursday night. After medical staff attended Stanton on the ground for nearly five minutes, they lifted him via stretcher and backboard onto a cart and drove him from Miller Park to a nearby hospital. The Associated Press reported that Stanton's father was attending the game and rode with him.
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com later reported that "Stanton suffered a facial laceration requiring stitches, multiple facial fractures and dental damage."
Stanton, the National League's home run leader, actually had swung at the ball — in what looked like self-defense — which meant it counted as a strike and not a hit by pitch. Even more bizarre, Stanton's replacement, Reed Johnson, was hit on the hand by Fiers on the next pitch, and umpires determined that Johnson had swung at that pitch, too, for strike three.
"I've never seen a guy get hit in the mouth and called for a swing," Redmond told reporters. "For the first-base ump to say he swung at that pitch, when [Stanton is] coughing up blood... what a joke."
That determination further angered the already upset Marlins, with on-deck hitter Casey McGehee among those yelling at umpires for making such a conclusion. Fiers, apparently responding to the visitors dugout, motioned for any angry Marlins to join him on the field.
Benches cleared and although no punches were thrown, emotions were running hot. McGehee and Marlins manager Mike Redmond were ejected. Fiers was angry because the Brewers decided on their own to pull him from the game. Both sides were warned by the umpires that the next suspicious-looking pitch would lead to more ejections.
In the bottom of the sixth, Marlins right-hander Anthony DeSclafani hit Brewers slugger Carlos Gomez in the elbow and was ejected, along with bench coach Rob Leary, the acting manager.
After the game, Fiers' voice cracked as he apologized for hitting Stanton by accident:
"I just want to send my thoughts and prayers to Giancarlo Stanton. You never think of throwing at somebody like that. Never in my life has that happened. I just feel very, very sad that I hit him. I'm sorry to [his] teammates, their fans, his family. It's just tough."

Baltimore Ravens roll to 26-6 victory over Pittsburgh Steelers

September 12 at 12:32 AM
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh walked toward the back of the bench to exhort the fans, held four fingers in the air to signal the start of the final quarter and welcomed Haloti Ngata to the sideline with a flying chest bump.
Despite one of the most trying weeks in franchise history, Harbaugh told Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome on Wednesday that he felt his team was ready to play well and was he ever prophetic.
The Ravens broke the trend of close games against their biggest rival by delivering a 26-6 beatdown to the Pittsburgh Steelers in front of an announced 71,181 at M&T Bank Stadium and a prime-time television audience.
Quarterback Joe Flacco completed 21 of 29 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns, both to veteran tight end Owen Daniels. The Ravens’ offense punished the Steelers with short passes and a persistent Bernard Pierce-led ground game. Justin Tucker kicked four field goals and the defense forced three turnovers and held the Ben Roethlisberger offense to two field goals.
And when it was over, a whole organization exhaled. The Ravens improved to 1-1 on the season and now get the weekend off before traveling to play the Cleveland Browns next week.
All week Baltimore dealt with the fallout from the release of Ray Rice. Despite the fact that one of their biggest rivals was coming to town , there was very little discussion about a football game.
But the Ravens looked more than ready, getting off to an early 10-0 lead and never trailing.
Like the Bengals did last week, the Steelers took the opening drive and immediately pushed deep into Ravens territory. The Ravens thought that they had them stopped for a three-and-out when strong-side linebacker Courtney Upshaw sacked Roethlisberger on third down. But Upshaw hit Roethlisberger with the crown of his helmet and was called for roughing the passer, prolonging the drive.
An 18-yard completion from Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown moved it to the Ravens 21, but two plays later, Baltimore middle linebacker Daryl Smith stripped wide receiver Justin Brown after a six-yard completion. DeAngelo Tyson pounced on the ball, putting an end to the Steelers’ 12-play, seven-plus minute drive.
Unlike last week, Baltimore’s offense started out in rhythm with a heavy reliance on the run game. A week after Flacco tied a career-high with 62 passing attempts, the Ravens ran the ball on eight of their first 12 plays. Pierce, who didn’t return to last week’s game after his second-quarter fumble, started and got six of those carries.
Flacco, who prolonged the drive by picking up a fourth-down conversion with a quarterback sneak, completed all four of his passes on the drive, the last a scoring pass to to Daniels alone in the back of the end zone.
The defense then forced a quick punt and Flacco again had the Ravens on the move. He hit Steve Smith for 23 yards to take the ball into Pittsburgh territory. A 13-yard run by Justin Forsett and a seven-yard reception by Daniels got the Ravens into the red zone. After hitting on his first eight attempts, Flacco threw two incompletions as Baltimore settled for a 30-yard Justin Tucker field goal and a 10-0 lead.
The Steelers, though, answered the field goal on the legs of second-year back Le’Veon Bell. He broke a series of tackles and bounced outside for a 21-yard gain. Roethlisberger then dumped the ball off to him on a 19-yard connection. Pittsburgh ultimately got inside the Ravens 10 before settling for Shaun Suisham’s 25-yard field goal.

Notorious High School Shooter T.J. Lane in Custody After Prison Escape

T.J. Lane, who was serving three life sentences for a notorious high school shooting spree, escaped from an Ohio prison but was later taken back into custody, authorities said.
Lane, who is now 19, broke out of the Allen Correctional Facility Thursday along with two other prisoners, scaling the facility's main perimeter fence. One of the escapees, Lindsey Bruce, was soon captured, but it took authorities hours to track down Clifford Opperud, 45.
Lane was taken into custody early Friday, captured about 100 yards outside of the facility's fence, warden Kevin Jones said.
"Obviously I am not happy that this happened," Jones said at a press conference. "No warden in my position would be happy that this happened, but the facts are that I am happy that he is back in custody."
How Ohio School Killer TJ Lane Snuck 'Killer' T-Shirt Into Court
Ohio School Shooting: Victim Was Dating TJ Lane's Ex-Girlfriend, Friend Says
One Shooting Victim Partially Paralyzed
Ohio State Patrol Captain Gary Allen said Lane didn't get further away because authorities quickly set a perimeter.
Authorities are still investigating the escape.
Lane shot and killed three students at Chardon High School on Feb. 27, 2012. He was sentenced to three life sentences. Three other students were wounded.
Lane's escape set off alarms in Chardon, Ohio, which is three hours by cars from the prison. The Chardon school district closed its schools on Friday because "the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community remain our highest priority."
Timothy Hewlin, the father of Demetrius Hewlin who was killed by Lane, was outraged by the escape.
"This cannot be happening. This guy killed my son and killed three kids. What type of system are they running here?" he demanded.
Lane's court appearances were marked by crude and shocking behavior. At his sentencing hearing Lane stunned the victims' families and his own lawyer when he unbuttoned his shirt to reveal a T-shirt with the word "killer" scrawled across the front. He spewed vile and unprintable words at the families of three students he killed, gave them the finger and then laughed and smiled as they described him as an animal and a monster.
Lane chuckled when the judge sentenced him to three life terms in prison with no chance for parole.
Lane was waiting for a bus to an alternative school when he killed three students at Chardon High School. Daniel Parmertor, 16, Demetrius Hewlin, 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, died in the attack. King had been dating Lane's former girlfriend, students told ABC News at the time.
Ian Friedman was Lane's lawyer and said he had spent hundreds of hours with him. "T.J. Lane is exceptionally smart there is no doubt about that. If anyone could escape it would have to be someone of that level of intelligence,” Friedman told ABC News.
“People ask me if he is dangerous. The facts speak for themselves,” he said.

Public Alert: TJ Lane Chardon High School Shooter Has Escaped Allen Correctional Facility (Update Captured)

Update 2]: TJ Lane has been captured by police but please be advised Clifford Opperud has not been captured or located at this time. TJ Lane was found with a pitchfork at the time of his arrest, but did not resist arrest when officers located him. Reportedly, Lane scaled a fence about 100 feet from the main perimeter fence. During his escape time, law enforcement monitored the surviving victims of Lane’s attacks for their safety. Lane was found about 100 yards from a church. Warden Kevin Jones admits the teen was not in the maximum security facility and they would now “sit down” and review that scenario.
Victims families want answers on how a convicted murderer escaped from a facility. Counselors will be on hand today to help those who relived the fear and anger upon hearing about Lane’s escape. Chardon schools are closed today.
For those in the area, please contact local districts to determine school status, especially with Opperud still on the loose.
[Update]: Police are asking individuals to not post any social media status updates on the police search. A Twitter user, who is also a freelance writer was posting updates by the minute, which went against the direct request by officials. The profile was taken down, and no longer accessible. Viral Global News will not post on any location information in respect to the requests of officials, until the escapees are captured or the information is permissible by authorities.
TJ Lane is considered highly dangerous, during his court hearing in early 2013 he taunted the victim’s families by exposing a t-shirt with the word “Killer” scrawled across it. He showed little remorse for his actions and the pain he brought families, friends and a community.
Clifford E. Opperud, 45, the second inmate who escaped with TJ Lane was serving a sentence for kidnapping, burglary and aggravated robbery. Officials ask citizens to stay in their homes and do not willingly approach the escapees, instead contact police immediately.
[Original]: This is a national alert stemming from Ohio. TJ Lane, the Chardon High School shooter who killed three students, and injured three others on Feb. 27, 2012, has escaped the Allen Correctional Facility. The teen murderer is one of two men who have escaped the facility. The Lima Police Department has instructed Ohioans and those traveling in the area to not pick up any hitchhikers. Please contact 911 or 419-227-4444 to report any sightings of the two men shown below. The agency has also asked residents not to post any areas they see police officers searching. This is for the safety of residents and officers, as the surrounding area is scoured.

Ravens coast past Steelers amid Ray Rice saga

BALTIMORE — Circle the wagons. Close ranks. Adapt and overcome.
The words are easy to say. The test is in the doing, and the Baltimore Ravens got it done in a big way Thursday night with a 26-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers just three days three after the team and the NFL hierarchy were caught up in the continuing turmoil of the Ray Rice domestic violence case.
The Ravens fielded a lot of questions this week about Rice being cut by the team and suspended indefinitely by the NFL. The controversy isn't going away. But against Pittsburgh, the Ravens answered the question of whether they could get ready to play against their AFC North rivals.
"If you're made of the right thing, I think adversity can bring you together," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "And our guys are made of the right stuff."
BOX SCORE: Ravens 26, Steelers 6
It wasn't a passionate speech in the locker room.
"I don't even know if I remember right now, standing in front of you, what the message was," Harbaugh said. "The message was pretty straight forward: 'We have a football game to play.' We care about our families. We care about the Rice family. … and we had a tough family situation this week."
The tone was set in the first quarter. Pittsburgh opened with a long drive but lost a fumble at the Baltimore 15-yard line. Quarterback Joe Flacco then led the Ravens on an 85-yard touchdown drive capped by his 2-yard pass to tight end Owen Daniels.
Was Flacco concerned about how the team would react?
"We've been through a lot together," said Flacco, who didn't have a huge night but completed 21 of 29 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
"No matter what it is, I think we're a team that tends to group together through tough times. I never had a doubt that we wouldn't be able to come out here and get a win tonight."
Wide receiver Steve Smith had six catches for 71 yards for the Ravens.
"It was just so tough with all the media that surrounded up this week," said Smith. "I mean, they were everywhere. In the parking lot, in the locker room … and then you go home to your wife or your girlfriend and then you have to take questions from them. … We focused. We knew we had our backs against the wall."

Sara Gilbert, wife Linda Perry expecting first child together

Sara Gilbert is expecting!
"The Talk" host, 39, announced she's pregnant during the daytime gabfest Tuesday.
During a segment of the show, Gilbert declined to participate in a scary dare that involved having a bed of nails placed on her stomach.
"I really do believe in facing your fears and doing things that make you uncomfortable, but I actually can't do the dare because I'm pregnant," Gilbert told her co-hosts.
Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, Julie Chen and Sheryl Underwood were all stunned by the news — the chat queens could barely contain their excitement as they jumped up to hug the mom-to-be.
It will be the first child for the former "Roseanne" star with new wife, musician Linda Perry, though she has two children from her previous relationship with TV producer Allison Adler.
Gilbert and Perry, 49, tied the knot in March, after dating for three years.

Remains of Tennessee's Holly Bobo found; Who's missing in Mississippi?

A Tennessee family can now lay their daughter to rest.
Late Monday, authorities confirmed via Twitter that the remains of nursing student Holly Bobo, who has been missing almost three and a half years, were found in the woods in Decatur County, Tennessee.
USA Today reports that two men were looking for ginseng in the woods Sunday morning when they discovered a human skull and contacted the Sheriff's Department.
Zachary Adams and Jason Autry were indicted earlier this year for kidnapping and murder in connection with Bobo's disappearance, But TBI Director Mark Gwyn said at a press conference that the investigation into Bobo's disappearance and death are not finished.
In July, a woman testified in a preliminary hearing in the case that she had seen a cellphone video that appeared to show Adams, along with Bobo tied up and crying, WSMV-4 reported.
Bobo was last seen alive by her brother shortly before 8 am walking into the woods outside her home in Darden, Tennessee with a man wearing camouflage.
Brothers Mark Pearcy and Jeffrey Kurt Pearcy were arrested in May and charged with tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact.
In spite of the national attention, it took investigators some time to track down the leads needed to find out what happeend to Bobo. That's not uncommon when someone seems to have disappeared into thin air.
Mississippi has several open cases of missing persons that currently are stumping investigators. Here are some of the recent ones.

AT&T Names New CIO Amid IT Reorganization

AT&T Inc.T -0.20% has named a new CIO as part of an internal technology reorganization meant to keep pace with the carrier’s shift, started earlier this year, toward a software-defined public network.
Pam Parisian, senior vice president of mobility and home IT solutions at AT&T, will be chief information officer of AT&T Services.
The reorganization, which also includes the formation of three new business units, is designed to reduce complexity and make it easier for the carrier to offer services to customers as it transforms its hardware-focused network into a software-centric one, said a person familiar with the matter. Given this new direction, “there were distinctions between AT&T Labs, IT and network operations that didn’t make sense,” that person said. The changes will take effect on September 16.
The shift comes as the second-largest U.S. telecom carrier continues to replace much of the infrastructure of its public network, based on expensive switches and routers with cheaper hardware and virtualized applications. AT&T first announced the move in February.
In June, AT&T’s Marian Croak, senior vice president for domain 2.0 architecture and advanced services development, told CIO Journal that one of the goals was to allow big corporate customers to more quickly tap new services, such as the ability to add more capacity.
The formation of three new business units could help AT&T bring new services and capabilities to market more quickly, while lowering its costs. Thaddeus Arroyo, formerly chief information officer of AT&T Services, is now president of a new technology development group that will include end-to-end services, customer experience and network security strategy. Ms. Parisian will report to Mr. Arroyo. Krish Prabhu will head up the architecture business unit and he will remain president of AT&T Labs and CTO of AT&T Services. In this role, he will be responsible for architecture planning and design. Bill Smith, formerly president of network operations, will lead technology operations including hardware planning, network operations and engineering. All three men will report to John Donovan, senior executive vice president of AT&T Technology and Network Operations.
AT&T’s capital spending budget is about $21 billion this year; about one-third of capital sending at U.S. telecom companies goes to network equipment, the Journal’s Thomas Gryta reported in February.

'Sons Of Anarchy' Succeeds As A Soap Opera Geared Toward Guys

[Note: This post discusses plot points and story lines from previous seasons.]
The first episode of the final season for FX's biker drama Sons of Anarchy begins with a familiar scene: gang leader/hero Jackson "Jax" Teller brutalizing a man in jail, interspersed with images of his gang and family living life — including his mother caring for his sons — with a mournful tune playing in the background.
Airing on Tuesday, Sept. 9, it's a bracing way to bring viewers up to speed since the show's action-packed season finale last year. That's when Jax's wife was brutally beaten and stabbed to death in their home — by Jax's mother, in a crime that was covered up from everyone by another member of the gang.
But the opening is also a potent reminder of just how Sons of Anarchy has managed to become one of FX's highest-rated series. (The episode where Jax's wife was killed by Katey Sagal's Gemma Teller was the second-highest-rated episode of the show's history). FX reports that the sixth season averaged 5 million key viewers (age 18 to 49) — and 3.6 million of them are men.
Sons of Anarchy works, in part, because it's designed as a soap opera for guys, wrapping emotional stories of family love, betrayal, sacrifice, scandal and murder in a mix of high-adrenaline outlaw action.
For every scene with a shooting or beating — and there are a lot — there are also moments of misguided love, tangled loyalties, complicated friendships and deadly family politics.
"If Jax finds out, not only will he have lost a wife, he'll lose his mother," Gemma Teller tells Juice, the gang member who covered up her crime. "I'm the only thread holding this family together ... as selfish as it seems, keeping our truth away from him is the right thing to do."
Sounds like something you'd expect from Helena Cassadine, the murderous matriarch on General Hospital who killed her own daughter in one story line.
Fans sometimes make a different comparison, likening Sons to Shakespeare. There's some truth to the analogy — especially when Ron Perlman played Clay Morrow, a guy who secretly had killed Jax's dad to marry his mom and take over running the gang. Back then, the show often felt like a Harley-fueled version of Hamlet.
Except Jax never wanted to kill himself, only those who stood in the way of taking care of himself, his family and his gang. Eventually, that list included Morrow, whom Jax killed last season.
Sons of Anarchy also humanizes characters often depicted as degenerate villains in other stories. The biker club sells guns to other dangerous gangs; their side businesses also include a porn video studio and brothels, but the show keeps viewers rooting for these characters by riding a fine line between outlaw and sleazebag. You almost never see them killing someone who isn't somehow involved in the criminal world or law enforcement.
It's a sometimes idealized vision of the outlaw life, where standup guys are judged by their loyalty to family and crew, absent some of the sordid realities in a life of crime.
These are also working-class guys. As I noted in 2011, FX has had a suite of high-quality shows that make antiheroes of working-class white guys in ways you don't see elsewhere in television, through programs including Justified, Louie and the long-gone, firefighter-focused black comedy Rescue Me.
The Sons crew members aren't driving big cars or living in nice suburban subdivisions; they're "average guys" who just happen to make a living selling guns, porn and prostitutes.
The show also has its own version of soap opera melodrama and unbelievable leaps of logic. Charlie Hunnam's Jax Teller has gotten away with more crimes than 10 guys on America's Most Wanted, and seeing him avoid suspicion in his wife's murder is yet another turn to stretch the bounds of logic.
Make no mistake: This is a story geared toward men, focused on fathers and sons, male bonding and loyalty, with an FX-level splash of violence and sexuality. The show's strongest female character, Gemma Teller, wound up killing Jax's wife Tara — the only other major strong, independent female character.
As this seventh season opens, Jax is more dangerous than ever, seeking revenge for the death of his wife by planning an elaborate scheme against the crime family he assumes murdered her.
Early in the show's run, tension in the series sprang from whether Jax would figure out that his mother and stepfather conspired to murder his father. Now, as the show spins out its last season — with guest stars like Marilyn Manson, Lea Michele, Courtney Love and Malcolm-Jamal Warner along for the ride — the question of whether he'll discover that his mother killed his only love hangs over everything.
Like many good soap operas, it all comes down to the good son and the bad parent — even when the story is laced with bullets and biker gangs.

News/ 11 Times Lifetime's Saved By the Bell Movie Ruined Our Childhood

It's been 25 years in the making, and it's finally here: Lifetime's Unauthorized Saved By the Bell movie aired tonight, and we spent two full hours of our Labor Day subjecting ourselves to it.
Was it good? No. Was it bad? That's a harder question to answer, but only because ‘yes' has more letters in it than ‘no,' and typing is hard after all the cookies we've eaten today. We will say, however, that we enjoyed watching it immensely, and that enjoyment was only mostly due to the excellent music (Oh hey, Bell Biv DeVoe).
The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell Story told the scandalous tale of everything that apparently went on behind the scenes over the course of four seasons, from relationships to drinking to drug use. It was, as we already said, quite scandalous, and many a revelation left us crying for the early nineties, when we were young and had no knowledge of things like marijuana and the movie Showgirls.
Anyway, for your enjoyment, here are the moments from The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell Story that made us uncomfortable. Join us in our discomfort!  NEWS: The stars of Unauthorized had never seen the original show1. Screech/Dustin interrupting Zach/Mark-Paul's time out. "This is my story." Wow! We're so glad Lifetime heard us sitting on our imaginary couches and never ever going, "Man, I wish I could hear about Saved By the Bell from Screech's point of view!"
2. "Mark-Paul" secretly touching up his own roots in the bathroom, just to really make sure you knew his blond hair wasn't real. We were sort of sold on this movie right at this moment.
3. "Mario" signing a mom's bellybutton. Ew.
4. When the casting directors "got rid" of Jennie Garth in casting the role of Kelly Kapowski. Ooooh burn!
5. "Mario" sneaking girls onto the set to do scandalous things with them. We choose to believe things like this never happened. The Saved By the Bell set was a pure, heaven-like place where nothing sordid ever occurred!
6. "Dustin" imagining himself as a blond with bad CGI abs. If you watched the movie, sorry for reminding you of this image. If you didn't watch it, sorry for the image that will haunt your nightmares for days to come.
7. "Dustin" taking a swig from a flask in his karate uniform, as you do. Saved by the Bell: The 11 craziest storylines ever featured on the show
8. That time "Dustin" said "I got wasted and I got laid." No Screech, no!
9. "Mark-Paul" sitting dirt-faced on a motorcycle. Real talk – this didn't ruin anything. This was just hilarious.
10. "Mario" in a green leotard. This, on the other hand, ruined a lot of things. (Almost no one can pull off a green, ruffly, full-body leotard, fake Mario Lopez included.)
11. Screech calling a time out at fake graduation to tell us (a slightly outdated version) of what everyone's been up to since the show ended. Bet you wish you hadn't wasted all that time reading (or writing) "Saved By the Bell: Where Are They Now?" posts!

Houdini' is pure biopic cheese... and occasionally a campy delight

There are at least a dozen great movies to be made out of the life of Harry Houdini, the magician/escapist/pre-cinematic showman/enemy of spiritualism. Unfortunately, History’s new Houdini tries to be all those movies and a few more. The result is a grab-bag of biopic clichĂ©s, awkwardly strung together by star Adrien Brody’s narration. Brody sounds like he’s auditioning for any of the parts in Sin City 3, and he overcooks every half-baked line into pure cheesecake: “The one thing I can’t seem to escape from… is me.” Or: “Some things can hit you in the gut worse than any punch.” Or, I kid you not, about three minutes later: “The only thing more devastating than a punch to the gut… is an arrow through the heart.”
The first hour of Houdini isn’t unwatchable, but it’s close. As Houdini’s long-suffering wife, Kristen Connolly (Cabin in the Woods‘ Final Girl) puts her wildly expressive face in service of skimpy material, overdelivering on every bemused/gleeful/grumpy reaction shot. (In the movie’s telling, Mrs. Houdini’s life was a series of reaction shots.) Just look at her before-and-after a young Houdini flirts with her using magic tricks:

Carrie Underwood Announces Pregnancy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country star Carrie Underwood and NHL player Mike Fisher chose the Labor Day holiday to announce they are expecting their first child.
Underwood and Fisher posted the announcement on their social media accounts on Monday. Underwood's publicist confirmed the couple will be expecting their first child in the spring.
The 31-year-old Underwood shot to fame after winning "American Idol." She has won six Grammys and sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. She was the first woman to twice win the Academy of Country Music's entertainer of the year award.
She will be co-hosting the upcoming Country Music Association Awards with Brad Paisley this November.
Fisher, a 34-year-old center for the Nashville Predators, is recovering from a ruptured left Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the start of the season.

In America, Labor Day is a lie

Labor Day is a day of rest that commemorates years of war. Congress inaugurated the holiday just days after President Grover Cleveland sent 12,000 federal troops to break the Pullman strike. The tactics were bloody; U.S. deputy marshals killed two men, and wounded many more.
That was 1894, an election year. Cleveland needed a way to win workers back to his side. He saw an opportunity in a federal holiday honoring workers — as well as organized labor.
"The movement for a national Labor Day had been growing for some time," writes PBS Newshour. "In September 1892, union workers in New York City took an unpaid day off and marched around Union Square in support of the holiday. But now, protests against President Cleveland's harsh methods made the appeasement of the nation's workers a top political priority. In the immediate wake of the strike, legislation was rushed unanimously through both houses of Congress, and the bill arrived on President Cleveland's desk just six days after his troops had broken the Pullman strike."
